Text around Image Zeolite is a safe, natural, non-toxic,inexpensive organic material providing proven benefits in many of applications.

    Because of its unique physical and chemical characteristics, zeolite has become the most reliable source of protection for nuclear accidents and a variaty of applications supplying the needs of the agriculture, horticulture, and environmental markets.

    Applications include chemical sieve, absorber, a feed additive, a food additive, an odor control agent. Zeolites are well suited for these applications due to its large amount of pore space, high resistance to extreme temperatures and chemically neutral basic structure.

Text around Image The molecular structure is made up of 4-connected networks of atoms, a tetrahedra, with a silicon atom in the middle and oxygen atoms at the corners.

    Zeolite in well-known animal feed supplements, in various horticultural growing media, in animal hygiene products, in water and air filtration applications and in odor control and general consumer products.

    Zeolite is currently used in many other sophisticated industrial applications throughout the world in a wide range of processes that require cation exchange, filtering at the molecular level, separation, absorption, and adsorption of harmful or deleterious compounds.

    ZEOLITE as a Solution for Radiation Exposure

    Natural zeolites can be used as ion exchangers for removal of radioactive cations such as Cs+ and Sr2+ and heavy metal cations such as Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Ni2+ and Pb2+.

    Radioactive Cs+ and Sr2+ may be present in recycling waters of atomic power stations or as environmental contaminants after accidents at atomic power stations

    Note: More than 500,000 tons of zeolite was dumped via helicopter at Chernobyl to absorb radioactive chemicals and other harmful toxins that were released during the disaster.

    Zeolite was used at Three Mile Island to clean up radioactive wastes long before the nuclear disaster occurred at Chernobyl
    After the Chernobyl disaster, zeolite was mixed into the feed supply of dairy cattle to reduce the radiation in the milk produced. (To keep radiactive ions out of milk)

    Children in the affected areas around Chernobyl were fed chocolate and biscuits that were formulated with zeolite and doses of zeolite- based liquids were administered to assist in the removal of radionuclides from their bodies.

    Zeolite was also incorporated in the cement blend that was utilized to “cap” the damaged Chernobyl reactor.

Text around Image An on-site dry-cask storage can be utilized to contain the spent fuel for about 30 years(utilizing our reinforced Zeolite-Concrete ).

    Casks whose walls are thick enough to provide radiation protection.The storage overpack provides the radiation shielding with space between the cask and overpack for convective circulation of air. (Transfer overpacks and transport overpacks are used for onsite movement and offsite shipping.)

    Note: Spent-fuel casks have already been in use for about 20 years (without the improved benefits of zeolites) and there is no evidence that they cannot last decades longer without significant deterioration.

    RISKS OF FUEL STORAGE POOLS

    Total loss of water from a high-density spent-fuel pool. Each spent fuel pool can hold 100 metric tons of radioactive material.

    There is not much doubt that the release of fission products to the environment would be significant that would affect an area of 7-22,000 square miles.

    Sandia Labs report did indeed show that the hottest part of the pool would heat up to the point where the cladding would first rupture and then ignite.


    SOLUTION TO SPENT FUEL STORAGE POOLS

Text around Image The primary function of the cask is to provide above ground, dry, shielded storage for the irradiated fuel for several decades.

    The casks can be designed to meet applicable requirements (e.g., shielding, thermal loading, pressure and seismic events.

    The cask would be surrounded by a concrete/zeolite overpack to provide sufficient shielding to limit the surface dose rate..

    The cask can be designed to protect the public, environment, and operating personnel from exposure during handling and storage.

    The cask design would be a passively ventilated concrete and steel shielded cask.

    The vent would be provided to help remove the decay heat generated by the fuel from the concrete. The design would include a carbon steel secondary containment boundary.



    TREATMENT OF RADIOACTIVE LIQUID WASTE BY ADSORPTION ON NATURAL ZEOLITE

    Zeolites have been used for the removal of several key radionuclides ((137)Cs, (60)Co, (90)Sr and (110m)Ag) from liquid radioactive waste.

    The effectiveness of zeolite treatment on decontamination factor (DF) in a combined process (chemical precipitation and adsorption) has been proven.

    Zeolites are the most suitable natural sorbent for radionuclides under dynamic treatment conditions and as an additive for chemical precipitation process.

    Zeolites were shown to have a high selectivity for (137)Cs and (110m)Ag as sorbent. In the absence of potassium ions, native zeolite removed (60)Co and (90)Sr very effectively from the liquid waste.

    Liquid waste treatment, decontamination factor was provided as 430 by using 0.5 mm zeolite at 30 degrees C.

    When a zeolite adsorber is divided into several fixed beds in cascade flow as in the Figure, and when granules of appropriate zeolite are used, the several types of VOC vapors can be adsorbed in separate beds

    Zeolites permit treatment of radioactive fallout from nuclear tests and accidents. The addition of zeolite to contaminated soils markedly reduced the strontium uptake by plants likewise the presence of zeolite inhibited the uptake of Cs in contaminated Bikini Atoll soils.

    Shenbar and Johanson found that 137Cs in soils after the fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, was not taken up by plants after treating the soil with a zeolite.

    Forberg et al. showed that a zeolite supplement to the diets of Swedish reindeer accelerated the excretion of 137Cs ingested with food contaminated by Chernobyl fallout

    Zeolites added to soils reduced the uptake of 137Cs by pasture plants in the vicinity of Chernobyl

    In Bulgaria, zeolite pills and cookies were prepared for human consumption to counteract Chernobyl fallout .
    The zeolite apparently exchanges 137Cs and 90Sr in the gastrointestinal tract and is excreted by normal processes, thereby minimizing assimilation into the body.

    Zeolite works at the cellular level by trapping heavy metals and toxins and safely removing them from the body.
